When businesses look for quick Cyber Essentials certification, most attention goes on turnaround times and prices. Far less thought goes to who actually reviews the submission. Yet the assessor decides whether your organisation meets the standard, and the quality of that review affects much more than a pass. It shapes how useful the feedback is and how well your certificate holds up when a customer or insurer asks harder questions. A fast process is only worthwhile if it is reliable, and a certified assessor makes both possible.

What an Assessor Actually Does

An assessor reviews your self-assessment answers against the five technical controls. They cannot see your systems, only what you have written, so their job is to check each answer meets the standard and that the answers make sense together. A good assessor notices when something is plausible but inconsistent. An organisation might say all devices are supported while describing equipment well known to be out of support, or claim MFA everywhere while listing a tool where that seems unlikely. Spotting these details makes the assessment meaningful.

Why Human Review Still Matters

Answers are written by people with very different technical knowledge, and the same question can be read several ways. A qualified assessor can recognise when an answer reflects a misunderstanding rather than a genuine gap and ask a clarifying question instead of failing it. At Solusec, every submission is reviewed by a qualified, certified assessor and never fed into an AI system. Assessment is one place where careful judgement matters most. Querying a doubtful answer may take a little longer, but it produces a certificate you can rely on.

Certification Bodies Versus Resellers

Not every company selling Cyber Essentials actually assesses it. Many resellers collect your answers and pass them to a certification body, adding a step between you and the person making the decision. That can make turnaround less predictable and communication slower, since your provider may be waiting in a queue they do not control. Buying directly from an appointed IASME Certification Body removes that layer, with the assessment done in-house and the certificate issued directly. You can check a provider's status in IASME's directory.

Clear Feedback Saves Time

If a submission falls short, the way the assessor communicates makes a big difference to how quickly you recover. A bare fail leaves you guessing, and guessing often leads to a second failure. Clear feedback explains which controls were not met, why, and what changes or evidence are needed. With that, your IT team can fix the right things and resubmit within the scheme's free resubmission window. Being able to talk directly to the team that assessed you clears up misunderstandings quickly.

Speed and Reliability Working Together

Speed and reliability are often presented as a trade-off, but the right assessor brings them together. Solusec assesses within one business day as standard, with a same-day urgent option for submissions before midday, while still ensuring every answer is properly reviewed. Published fixed pricing removes another source of uncertainty. It is worth looking at how Solusec approaches fast cyber essentials and what careful assessment adds beyond the turnaround figure: a trustworthy certificate, useful feedback and someone to talk to.
