Are There Any Boiler Grants Available In 2026?

Yes, some households can still get help with heating improvements in 2026. But the type of support available depends on what needs replacing, the household's circumstances and the heating system being considered.

The most relevant scheme for certain boiler replacements is ECO4, which is due to run until 31 December 2026. It supports energy-efficiency and heating measures for eligible households rather than giving every homeowner a fixed amount towards a new boiler.

There is also the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, but despite its name, it is mainly designed to help households move away from fossil-fuel heating. Its grants are used towards eligible heat pumps and certain biomass boilers, rather than simply replacing an old gas boiler with a new one.

What Support Is Actually Available?

It helps to separate the different forms of assistance before looking at eligibility.

Scheme Main purpose Available in 2026?
ECO4 Heating and energy-efficiency improvements for eligible households Yes, until 31 December 2026
ECO4 Flex Helps certain households identified through local routes Yes, within ECO4
Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grants towards eligible low-carbon heating Yes
Warm Homes programmes Wider home energy-efficiency improvements Some programmes are available or being rolled out

ECO4 works differently from a normal consumer grant. Energy suppliers have obligations under the scheme and promote qualifying measures for eligible households. Ofgem administers the scheme, while the government sets its policy and legislation.

That is why the phrase government free boiler scheme can be misleading. A homeowner is not normally applying to the government for a cheque to buy a boiler. The support comes through the scheme's supplier arrangements and depends on whether the proposed work qualifies.

Can ECO4 Pay Towards A Boiler?

In certain circumstances, yes.

ECO4 covers a range of heating and energy-efficiency measures. The rules include provisions for replacing certain broken efficient heating systems where they cannot be economically repaired. Other heating systems may qualify for upgrades where the relevant ECO4 requirements are met.

The scheme is not simply based on how old a boiler is.

For example, having a boiler that is 12, 15 or 20 years old does not automatically create an entitlement to a free replacement. The type and condition of the heating system, alongside the household and property requirements, need to be considered.

ECO4 also takes a broader approach to improving homes. Depending on the circumstances, support can involve insulation or other measures alongside heating improvements.

That can make the assessment different from a standard boiler replacement quotation.

Who Could Qualify?

ECO4 has several routes into the scheme.

Some households qualify because they receive specific benefits. Other households can potentially qualify through ECO4 Flex, which allows local authorities and other permitted bodies to identify households that meet the relevant low-income or vulnerability criteria.

The property matters as well. ECO4 is aimed at improving the energy efficiency of homes occupied by households that meet its requirements. The applicable property rules depend on the type and tenure of the home.

This is why a person should not judge eligibility from one detail alone. Receiving a benefit may be relevant, but the heating system and property still need to satisfy the applicable requirements.

Does Being Over 60 Mean You Can Get A Free Boiler?

No.

There is no general rule in 2026 that gives everyone over 60 a replacement boiler.

This is particularly important because searches for a boiler replacement scheme over 60s can make the support sound like a separate age-based grant. In reality, age by itself does not provide automatic entitlement.

An older homeowner may qualify through Pension Credit, another qualifying benefit, or an ECO4 Flex route. The funding would still be based on the relevant scheme rules rather than simply reaching 60 or state pension age.

The same applies to the boiler itself. An old appliance does not automatically qualify just because it has been installed for many years.

What If The Boiler Still Works?

A working boiler needs a different assessment from one that has failed.

If an efficient boiler is still operating, its age alone does not normally make it eligible for replacement through ECO4. Where a qualifying heating system has broken down and cannot be economically repaired, the scheme has specific provisions that can allow replacement, subject to the applicable limits and conditions.

An inefficient heating system can also be considered for an upgrade under the relevant ECO4 rules.

So before looking for funding, it is useful to establish exactly what type of boiler is installed and whether it is working properly. A claim based only on the boiler's age can create unrealistic expectations.

What If You Want A Heat Pump Instead?

This is where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme becomes relevant.

The current scheme provides:

  • £7,500 towards an eligible air-source heat pump
  • £7,500 towards an eligible ground-source heat pump
  • £5,000 towards an eligible biomass boiler
  • £2,500 towards an eligible air-to-air heat pump

The grant is intended to reduce the upfront cost of moving to qualifying low-carbon heating.

The eligibility rules are different from ECO4. You generally need to own the property and replace an existing fossil-fuel or eligible electric heating system. The new installation must also meet the scheme's technical requirements.

This means someone with an old gas boiler has two very different questions to consider: are they looking for support to replace the conventional boiler, or are they prepared to change the type of heating used by the home?

There Is A Higher Heat Pump Grant For Some Homes

The standard heat pump grant is not the only amount available.

From 21 July 2026, eligible off-gas-grid properties replacing certain oil or LPG heating systems can receive up to £9,000 towards an air-to-water or ground-source heat pump. The higher amount applies only where the relevant property and existing heating conditions are met.

This is a useful distinction for rural homes and properties that do not have a mains gas connection. A household should not assume that every heat pump installation receives £9,000.

What About The Warm Homes Plan?

Heating support in 2026 is broader than boiler replacement.

The government's Warm Homes Plan sets out funding for home upgrades, including low-income household programmes and continued investment in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. It also sets out longer-term support for measures such as heat pumps, solar panels and batteries.

The exact programme available to a household can depend on where the property is located, its tenure and the household's circumstances. Not every announced funding stream works as a direct household grant.

That is another reason to check the actual scheme behind an offer rather than relying on the phrase “free boiler”.

What Should You Check Before Applying?

Start with the heating system rather than the advertised grant.

Find out:

  • What type of boiler or heating system is installed?
  • Is it working or broken?
  • Is the property connected to mains gas?
  • What is the property's EPC rating?
  • Does the household receive a qualifying benefit?
  • Could an ECO4 Flex route apply?
  • Are you looking for another boiler or a different heating technology?
  • Would you need to contribute towards any work?

These answers can quickly narrow down which schemes are relevant.

It is also worth asking whoever is offering the work to identify the funding route in writing. You should know what is being funded, what is excluded and whether any contribution remains before agreeing to an installation.

So, Can You Get A Boiler Grant In 2026?

Possibly, but there is no single boiler grant that applies to every household.

ECO4 remains available until 31 December 2026 and can support qualifying heating and energy-efficiency measures, including certain boiler replacement situations.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a separate route for eligible low-carbon heating installations, with grants of up to £7,500 for standard qualifying heat pumps and up to £9,000 in certain off-gas-grid cases.

For someone with an ageing boiler, the important question is not simply whether a “free boiler” is available. Check the existing heating system, household circumstances and property first. That will give you a much more realistic idea of what support may be available in 2026.
